Speaker 1:For now we're going to jump into the seitan of the show. Like I said, today we are talking about. What can nature teach us about coping with feeling powerless. Watching what's happening in politics right now, I'm getting really, really scared. I've often wondered what my ancestors must have felt and thought as a certain party and person came to power in a certain country in Europe. Now, sadly, I think I can say I'm experiencing that all in real life. I am hopeful that I and others who get it aren't powerless to change the tide. At the same time, I am terrified that he will win and whatever sense of security I thought I had will be gone.
Speaker 1:I am thinking of ways to keep myself and my furry family safe if the worst should happen. I'm trying to balance the need to be safe with the need to also be authentically myself and not hide who I am just for the sake of being safe. At the same time, I am praying that I will never, ever need these plans and that no one else will be faced with these same fears ever, ever again, unlike my ancestors. There's a whole lot of modern tech, social media and high-tech tracking devices to be considered in all of this planning. I also know that getting bogged down in this fear and anxiety and the stress of what might happen doesn't change anything and it's paralyzing. So I took a deep breath and I tried to figure out what nature would teach us about this and situations like this, where the potential for powerlessness, or at least feeling powerless, exists and inspiration came in the shower. And so now here we are on this episode, and I don't know about you guys, but I get some of my best ideas in the shower, also driving some of my best ideas in the shower, also driving. So while I was in the shower that day, I realized that what has me so worried is that I, simply for being who I am, could potentially become a powerless person, and that powerlessness versus powerful is very, very much like the dynamic of invasive plants versus native plants in nature.
Speaker 1:At times, it can seem like certain politicians and leaders are the equivalent of invasive plants. Politicians and leaders are the equivalent of invasive plants. They seek to overtake, to cause harm and to stop all life, except for theirs and that of those like them, from growing, expanding, being healthy, even existing and, as we've talked about in previous episodes, native plants are vital for a healthy ecosystem, and invasive plants wreak havoc with the natural balance. The reason for this is because invasive plants overtake the habitat of native plants, and the insects, birds and other beings on up through the food web can't survive once the invasive plants overtake all the native ones, just as these particular leaders seek to overtake the country with their views, their beliefs and their ways of seeing the world, to the exclusion of all others.
Speaker 1:In nature, invasive plants are dealt with in a couple of ways. The most effective usually involves compassionate and knowledgeable humans getting involved to safely remove the invasive plants and prop up the native ones. So if you are not in a community currently being harmed but consider yourself an ally, this is where you come in. You need to be the person who helps remove the invasive species. In the case of leaders and politicians who we wish didn't exist, you can vote, run for office, run for a local office, join committees, write letters, etc. If you, like me, are in one or more of the communities in danger of being overtaken by the invasive species of leaders and politicians, you, like me, likely feel powerless or fear that you might very soon. But guess what? Those native plants being overtaken by invasive ones. They probably feel pretty powerless too. The good news is that, just like those plants aren't, neither are we. When native plants come under attack, they keep trying to survive, they try to go around through over, etc.
Speaker 1:The invasive plants, and so those of us who belong to those groups currently under attack from leaders and politicians who wish us harm, wish we didn't exist, we need to keep going and fight back. We need to find ways to survive in spite of feeling powerless, and here's a few ideas Vote, join committees, run for local office, etc. Just like our allies, we also need to be supporting each other in the background. We need to find safe places to gather, to connect with each other, to hold each other in a sacred space while working to make the world a better, safer place for everyone. Now, while this is not intended to be a sales pitch, I do just want to mention that this safe gathering place focusing on positive change is exactly what my group, the Soulful Sisterhood, is all about, and I would love to have you join us, and I will provide that link in the show notes if it speaks to you. I would also love to hear from you about how you're supporting your community, either as an ally, or how you're planning to hold on to your power if the worst should happen in the upcoming election. So hit me up on my contact page to let me know, and please do not forget to go to the polls and cast your vote for the guy who won't take away anyone's personal power.
